I am the first to admit that I am cowardly when it comes to using color- all the walls of my home are a lovely creamy white and I intend for them to stay that way. Paint colors with names like blackberry wine, radicchio, peacock blue and ashwood moss (from Benjamin Moore) will never grace my walls because I am afraid I will tire of them before the paint is dry 🙂
But wait, all is not lost! I am fearless, however, in my use of colorful prints and patterned fabrics. The creams and whites on the walls provide an art gallery-like neutral backdrop against which the vivid fabrics shine.
The rules that I follow for the mixing and matching are simple:
1. One print is usually oversized- large flowers or other motifs in a larger scale. For instance, like this chair.
2. The next thing I do is to pick a color that is part of the color scheme of the chair. I am partial to this red and I add a solid red pillow. I may play around with textures here- the red pillow cover is made of soft leather and provides a nice contrast to the raised embroidery on the chair.
3. Finally, I pick a pillow with a smaller print that complements with and provides a subtle tension to the pattern on the chair. I used the Saffron Marigold Indian Summer pillow cover for this (as seen in the above picture)
Do try this at home and let me know how it works for you.
Here is another combination for you to try- this time with the Moroccan Spice Route pillow.
