The Inspiration Behind Istanbul
Warmest greetings from Anisha, owner and designer at Saffron Marigold. Join me and discover the magic behind our mesmerizing, tile-inspired print, Istanbul.
The Main Print
Istanbul is inspired by the majestic Blue Mosque (the Sultan Ahmed Mosque) in Turkey, an architectural marvel built to showcase the power of the Ottoman empire and its devotion to Islam. Its walls and domes are covered in hand-painted Iznik tiles and more than two hundred Venetian stained glass windows, sparkling like jewels under the sun.
Arabesque patterns interlace and scroll in our main print, echoing the intricate Iznik tile and calligraphy designs of the Blue Mosque, as well as its iconic dome silhouette.
The Border Element
The border element is inspired by a mihrab, an important element of Islamic design, accompanied by radial motifs that emulate the domed ceilings of mosques. Rows of floral motifs also make up the border—a call to the tulips, hyacinths, and carnations painted on decorative Iznik tiles.
The Complementary Print
Our complementary print it imparts a definitive Middle Eastern vibe: exotic, elegant, and full of sensory splendor. In contrast to the pattern-rich and elaborate main print, its complementary boasts an expansive composition, featuring a stylized date palm, generously spaced across a rich, indigo ground.
The Block Printing Process
Employing the time- and labor-intensive technique of discharge printing, we pay homage to the traditional craftsmanship of Turkish and Indian regions.
Discharge printing requires artisans to carefully apply a bleach paste that simultaneously adds and removes color from select areas of dark fabric. After a steaming treatment, intricate designs begin to emerge. This meticulous process demands the perfect balance of temperature and humidity, making the sweltering Indian summer the ideal canvas for our artistic endeavors.
